Do you know?...

This page is to post queries that arise during the course of investigating our various projects.  If you can help with any details, please drop us a line...

Elaine Davies has sent me a link to the photo below, (which appears in Alwyn Ladell's flickr collection HERE  along with lots of other fabulous Bournemouth views) You can clearly see the domed window which still survives in the building, now used by Denman's Electrical....

It's dated 1913, which raises an interesting point.  Where was the location of the original Moordown Congregational Church pictured here in a photo from Michael Stead:

As that text reads 'Nursery Rd' it might be reasonable to assume it's at the location of the little 'independent' chapel, which still stands.

It just seems a much larger building and the adjacent houses look 'wrong'.....Unless the whole area was re-developed after 1906?....

Anyone have any more information on this 'first' Moordown Congregational Church?...

Edit: ...looking at maps from the period indicates that this earlier church was indeed at a different location.

Bright's 1893 Bournemouth map, which you can find a copy of HERE shows the 'Moordown Independent Chapel' some way down the hill of Nursey Rd, with the 'Peoples' Hall' occupying the site of todays' 'Life Centre' chapel.

So it does seem that, as part of the housing development of Nursey Rd just beofre the First World War, the church was knocked down, and a replacement built on the site that is now Denmans Electrical....

Thanks to Steve Mott for his observations on this.....

  • Does anyone have any photos - or even details - of the location  of the 'School House' in Evelyn Rd?..
It appears to have been the residence of the Winton and Moordown School caretaker, up until the 1950's (and possibly beyond?)

We have the names Wellstead,Hawkins and Diggens listed in various Kelly's over the years, but the entries for the location of the house itself seem slightly more elusive....

It is always listed as being in Evelyn Rd, but is never numbered, and appears to move about! --  described as being on the east side as well as the west.. or even north .. side in various editions?

Anecdotal evidence received so far suggests it was actually located in the school grounds, before the construction of Evelyn Mews, but does anyone recall exactly where?....

Or as I say, if we could locate a photo?......

Update 2.5.13....Steve Mott has located a photo of the School House, shown below. Taken, it would appear, after the extra temporary buildings were in use.  So, probably some time in the 1950s then?...
The location is now occupied by the bungalows of Evelyn Mews

Steve located the photo via the Winton School Facebook page here:  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=o.47667737382&type=3
Thanks for finding this, Steve...

(This interest comes as result of an email received from Eric Masterman in California, who is trying to discover more about his great aunt, Emma Masterman, whose address is listed as the 'School House, Evelyn Rd' at the time of her death in 1950.
It transpires that Emma's youngest daughter, Hilda, was married to Walter Diggens, who is listed as the resident of the School House in the 1950's.
So it seems possible that Emma was either living with - or staying with - her youngest daughter at the time of her death?....)
