MOORDOWN MEDICS..
This page is for us to try and recall the names and locations of the various Moordown medical practitioners over the years. Not just the doctors, but the nurses, midwives, dentists and pharmacists as well......

Let's start with the Doctors' surgeries:
854 Wimborne Rd. (This was the starting location of the practice that became today's Moordown Medical Centre).
1923? – 1931 Dr. Royston
1932 – 1965 Dr. Mulvany
1966 – 1975 Dr. Cronin
In 1975, the practice then moved to:
2a King George Ave.
1975 – 1994 (in order of joining the practice) Drs: Cronin – Samuels – Sen – Rogers – Pryce - Smith
2a Redhill Cres. (Moordown Medical Centre)
1994 – present (in order of joining the practice) Drs: Sen - Rogers – Pryce – Smith - Barker – Wilde - Pollard - Moratta - Turney - Elfes - Evans - Wright

Of course, the boundaries of Moordown were constantly moved over the years, and as the population grew - especially north of Castle Lane - there was an medical practice set up at
85 Castle Lane.
Originally run by Dr. James Fisher, (who sadly passed away on 19th Dec 2012, at the age of 90) the practice was also fortunate enough to have benefitted from the services of several other doctors over the years, including Dr.Robertson, Drs. John and David Granger, and Dr. Jack.
The practice building was partially demolished in the 1980s, when the practice was moved to Tolpuddle Gardens , a location better suited to it's growing Muscliffe clientele, and new commercial premises at 85 Castle Lane now house an estate agents.

We should include those doctors who practices were not actually in Moordown itself, but who included Moordown residents amongst their patients....
Dr. Geoffrey Westgarth-Taylor for example.
Although he himself lived in Glenferness Ave, his practice was located at 1, Columbia Rd from 1946 until 1956, when it moved to 197 Redhill Drive, where it remained until 1969.
And Dr. Fogarty - a lady doctor with a practice in Bryanstone Rd - but who was known to have had Moordown patients . She worked there from 1946 until well into the 1950s...

Nurses and midwives.
Kelly's directory tells us of Miss Alice Benson as a midwife, who lived at 909 Wimborne Rd, in the 1920s.
And also of the unfortunately named Nurse Cosh, a 'maternity nurse' who lived on the corner of Coronation Ave, again in the 1920s.
But there must have been lots of others - probably all women - who served as district nurses and midwives in our area over the years. Do you have any names?.........do let us know.

Dentists.
OK, nobody likes to be reminded of dentists – but we're grateful for them when we do need them!
There has been a dentist in Dr. Cronin's old surgery address at 954 Wimborne Rd since 1975.
Originally Mr Sullivan, currently of course, Mr Hull. And next door at 952 .. Mr. Nash (now retired)
But what other Moordown dentists can we add to our list?.....

(this dispensary went on to be re-located at 960 Wimborne Rd( now Boots) after the Moordown Medical Centre moved to it's current location in the 1990s)
886 Wimborne Rd – Ellis – Sharpe - Adam
926 Wimborne Rd - Morgan - Kenneth Callow - Muriel Callow
1043 Wimborne Rd - Lawrence Abbott
27 Castle Lane West - W.G. Cond
That's 12 of the pharmacists who have operated their dispensaries at the above addresses. Have I left anyone out?.. (Edit -- Carol Joy writes to inform us that Muriel Callow, Kenneth Callow's wife , was also a dispensing chemist herself, and an equal partner in the business. Thanks for that information, Carol)
What about other dispensaries?......and were (are?) there any more Moordown chemists not on Wimborne Rd?..

Opticians:
I'm sure there are several opticians we should include.....
Two that spring to mind straight away are Mr Lawrence, who practiced at 786 Wimborne Rd from 1950 until at least 1975 (that latter date to be confirmed)
And Raymond Cresswell, whose premises at 930 Wimborne Rd were in operation from 1939 until 1958. He then moved his business a few doors further along the road, to 942, on the corner of Maclaren Rd, where he continued to practice well into the 1970s.
I'm sure there are others?.....do let us know if you can remember any....
And what other 'medics' have I forgotten.....chiropodists, for example .....
